has taken 18 years for singer-actor Babul Supriyo to get his name changed on his
passport. On Wednesday morning, the singer finally got his amended passport that included his name ‘Babul’.
Says Babul, “I had got my passport done in Kolkata in 1992. I remember being severely rebuked at home for having to pay a bribe of Rs 300 to get my passport done. However, my name in the passport had been registered as Supriya Baral.

That was the name I had in all my certificates from Calcutta University. I had tried hard to change the spelling from ‘Supriya’ to ‘Supriyo’ since the former is a girl’s name. But nothing could be done and I have had to live with a maiden’s name.”
In between, Babul had changed his address in his passport. Part-lethargy and part-work pressure had prevented the singer from changing his name in the passport. “There have been occasional problems with flight tickets. Since I am not travelling abroad during this time of the year what with my film, Ogo Bodhu Sundari, all set for release soon, I had the time to address the name-issue in my passport. But even then, I couldn’t change my name from ‘Supriya’ to ‘Supriyo’. My new passport only adds the name ‘Babul’ to the already existing Supriya Baral.”
Seems like Babul has finally resolved his identity crisis. Well, partially, at least.
